Minister of Immigrant Absorption Sofa Landver Fights Successfully for Great Gains in the Budget for Aliyah

Published on: May 14, 2013

Achievements of the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption under Minister Sofa Landver in the 2013 Budget:

The Student Authority will continue to work, housing eligibility will be extended by five years.

After long discussions with the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption can be credited with significant achievements in the 2013 budget which was approved at a cabinet meeting last night:

• Extension of entitlement to housing for 15 years – which is no less than a revolution after entitlement to housing for immigrants was for many years just for a period of 10 years
• The Student Authority – after years of uncertainty, for the first time in budget of 2013 the Student Authority, which funds further education for new immigrants, will have a total budget of 70 million ₪. The Student Authority, a major part of the Aliyah of young Jews to Israel, will continue to operate under the Ministry with the departure of the Jewish Agency at the end of this year. The Immigrant Absorption Ministry assumed full responsibility for the Authority.
• Doubling the housing rental assistance – in the near future discussions will be held with the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Housing to increase the housing benefits from 400 ₪ to 800 ₪.
• The budget for the Ministry of Immigrant Absorption will be raised by 183 million NIS.

Minister of Immigrant Absorption Sofa Landver said: “I am proud of the achievements of the Ministry and the fact that the government of Israel recognizes the contribution of immigration and the continued importance of practical Zionism. The fact that the Student Authority will continue to work fully under our responsibility is a message to young people around the world that they have an address and a reason to make Aliyah. Regarding housing issues, we already decided and acted during my first term that housing assistance is critical for a successful absorption, and during this term I will continue to work for this cause.”
