(17-01-2010) MK Amar's Bill to Put Timers on Traffic Lights

The Ministerial Committee for Legislation will discuss a proposal that would require attaching a "countdown clock" to traffic signals that would show drivers how much time is left until the light turns green or red. The idea behind the proposal, says Beytenu MK Hamed Amar is to let drivers rationally decide whether or not they can "make" a light before it turns red – thus eliminating the need many driver feel to rush at the last second unnecessarily.

Amar said that the law would prevent the many accidents that occur because of "poor planning" by drivers, who find themselves unable to slow down at the last second when a light turns red. "Many countries use such timers, and they have proven their effectiveness," he said.
