(21-02-2010) FM Leiberman off to Brussels for meetings with senior European officials
FM Leiberm an leaves on Sunday to meet with European Foreign Ministers and senior officials of the European Parliament. In the meetings, FM Leiberman will discuss bilateral, Middle Eastern and regional and issues. FM Leiberman will meet with the Foreign Ministers of the European Union, with the First-Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Baroness Catherine Ashton, with the President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek, with the Foreign Ministers of the United Kingdom, Romania, Belgium, and Slovenia, with the chairman of the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) Joseph Daul, with the chairman of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Michał Kamiński, with the European Friends of Israel (EFI) and other senior officials in the European Parliament.
This will be the first meeting of a senior Israeli official with Baroness Ashton since she assumed her position as First-Vice-President of the European Commission. FM Leiberman intends to discuss with her the strengthening of ties and increased cooperation with the EU. FM Leiberman stated that he places great importance on his meetings the Baroness Ashton and other MEPs in light of the significant role and growing influence of the Parliament and Europe in the international arena after the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon.
In his meetings with the Foreign Ministers, FM Leiberman intends to discuss the need to take significant steps to prevent the continued attempts by Iran to achieve nuclear capability, other issues relating to the Middle East and bilateral matters.
