(02-06-2009) FM Lieberman Praises Russian Ties |
Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who is visiting Russia this week, has praised Russian ties amid recent rifts over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and Iran.
Lieberman arrived in Moscow earlier on Tuesday for scheduled talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, his counterpart Sergei Lavrov, and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.
The high-level meeting aimed at "strengthening Russian-Israeli relations and renewing the Middle East peace process," RIA-Novosti news agency quoted Russian foreign ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko.
The trip comes amid Kremlin's bids for a more active role in the Middle East, with plans to host a peace conference between Israel and Palestinian factions.
Calling Russia “a main partner…in terms of a regional settlement and the Palestinian problem,” Moldova-born Lieberman went on to add that the countries' were at a high point in bilateral relations.
However, both sides have had differences over the Gaza Strip's elected Hamas government and Iran. (Press TV)
