MK Rotem Demands Loyalty to Israel as a Jewish, Zionist, and Democratic State

This week sees the Knesset discussion of  the Chairman  of the Knesset's Constitution, Law and Justice Committee MK David Rotem 's proposal to amend the Basic Law that requires members of Knesset to swear allegiance by stating, "I swear to remain loyal to the State of Israel and to faithfully fulfill my mission in the Knesset." According to Mr. Rotem's more robust version, the words "State of Israel" will be followed by "as a Jewish, Zionist and democratic state and to its values and its symbols."
Rotem's fellow Beytenu members MK Robert Ilatov, MK Moshe Matalon and Mk Alex Miller also signed the motion.
Rotem told Ynet: "In recent years there has been an unacceptable phenomenon of MKs acting against the Knesset's values, and at times even against laws and rules legislated by the Knesset."
He added that "anyone who heard or saw MKs El-Sana and Zahalka's slanderous comments in recent days against the defense minister, and even allowed Israel's greatest enemy Ismail Haniyeh to speak to the public using a mobile device which is the property of the Knesset and the State, understands that there is a need to take steps to make MKs loyal to the State."MK David Rotem propoes to change
In response Haredi opposition to his bill, Mr. Rotem said, "I don’t understand why the haredi factions are opposed. The law doesn’t require that they become Zionist. Neither does it require that Arab MKs become Jewish or Zionist. The law simply requires that they be loyal to the State of Israel that was founded as a Zionist, Jewish and Democratic state."
